There’s something about fall that makes us want to simplify things. Cooler mornings, cozy sweaters, warmer showers—and maybe a little more attention to how our skin feels as the seasons change.
If body wash has been your go-to for years, fall might be the perfect time to come back to the bar.
At Aspen Kay Naturals, we’ve been handcrafting cold process soap in small batches since we started. We love bar soap for a lot of reasons, but here are five of our favorites.
1. Your Skin May Appreciate the Change
One of the beautiful things about traditional cold process soap is that glycerin is naturally created during soapmaking and remains in the finished bar.
Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it attracts water. Combined with a thoughtfully formulated soap, it can contribute to that comfortable, clean feeling many people love after using handmade soap.
As cooler weather arrives and the air becomes drier, choosing a cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin feeling overly stripped can make your shower routine a little more enjoyable.
2. Less Plastic, Less Bathroom Clutter
Take a look around your shower. It’s amazing how quickly the bottles add up.
Switching your body cleanser from a bottle to a bar is one simple way to reduce plastic packaging—and clear a little space around the tub.
No pump. No plastic bottle. No trying to shake out the last bit from the bottom.
Just a bar of soap and a good soap dish.
For a small-batch company like ours, we also love that bar soap fits naturally with our goal of reducing unnecessary waste wherever we can.
3. A Good Bar Can Last a Long Time
A well-cured cold process soap can be surprisingly long-lasting, especially when you give it a little care.
The secret is simple: let it dry between uses.
Keep your bar on a draining soap dish and, if possible, away from the direct shower stream when you’re not using it. The longer it stays dry between showers, the less likely it is to soften and disappear too quickly.
How long a bar lasts depends on its size, formulation, frequency of use, and storage—but taking care of your soap can help you get more enjoyment from every bar.
4. There’s a Bar for Almost Every Preference
This is where handmade soap gets fun.
Different oils, butters, clays, botanicals and other cosmetic ingredients can create completely different bars.
At Aspen Kay Naturals, we make soaps featuring ingredients such as turmeric, Manuka honey, aloe vera, calendula, oatmeal, goat milk, Dead Sea mud, charcoal, neem and more.
Maybe you love a creamy lather. Maybe you’re drawn to botanical ingredients. Maybe you want something unscented. Or perhaps you simply enjoy trying something new.
There doesn’t have to be one “perfect” soap for everyone.
Finding your favorite is part of the experience.
5. Yes, Bar Soap Can Be Hygienic
One of the questions we hear is whether bar soap is sanitary.
Research has looked at whether bacteria on a soap bar transfers to the hands during normal washing. A frequently cited study found that test bacteria deliberately placed on soap bars were not detected on participants’ hands after washing under the study conditions.
For everyday personal use, simply rinse your bar and allow it to dry between uses.
Good drainage helps keep your soap ready for the next shower—and helps it last longer too.

Why Make the Switch This Fall?
As temperatures drop and indoor heating comes back on, many of us start noticing changes in how our skin feels.
It’s a good reminder to pay attention to the little things: shorter warm showers instead of very hot ones, moisturizing when needed, and choosing cleansing products that leave your skin feeling comfortable.
Switching to natural bar soap doesn’t need to be complicated.
Sometimes it’s simply about slowing things down and getting back to something a little more traditional—a handcrafted bar, good ingredients, a warm shower, and a few quiet minutes to yourself.
